Insect stings – Welcome to Spring

Every Spring at PAH we get some very nasty inflammatory skin lesions. We often see more than one animal present with these nasty skin lesions from all different locations. In spring time there are more insects around and our pets are often exploring the garden.

This is Tilly, a very much loved Portuguese Water Dog. (Yes..Obama had one of these. They are great dogs and have low allergy coats.) Poor Tilly arrived at PAH with a really sore right front foot. You could see that it was swollen from across the room but once the hair was clipped off you could see why she was so sore.

Ouch!

We think these are caused by insect stings. They could even be the elusive white spider bite. Unfortunately, our patients are unable to tell us what has happened.

What to do?

Clip and clean it. Pain relief. Antibiotics…..and expect it to get worse before it gets better…..which it did.

Tilly was a great patient. She let us clip and clean her foot but when she got home the swelling got larger and larger. And then it burst.

Tilly’s owner watched her carefully and made sure the surrounding skin stayed nice and normal. Then she followed one of our favourite recipes  – time and patience.Three days later the whole area had really calmed down and Tilly was feeling so much better. Let’s hope that never happens again.  Explore all our interesting posts
