Where are your puppy classes held?
The Puppy School Yard has an entrance at the north end of the driveway. There is an alcove to step off the driveway but be careful of cars. The double-gated entrance will be unlocked for puppy school.
The area is completely enclosed but please keep puppies on a lead.
When are your puppy classes held?
Puppy School is booked through Veronicas Canine Concepts. All classes and times are on the booking site. If you have any questions please email vsdogtraining@icloud.com
My puppy has had only one vaccination, will it be alright?
Yes. All the puppies are in the same situation. Some have had one vaccine and some have had two. Our classes are held in a hygienically cleaned, dedicated training space which makes it very safe.
If I miss a class can I make it up?
Once booked, puppy school will be a consecutive 4 weeks. Puppies are growing very quickly. Missing a class is a problem as we don’t do catch up classes.
If missing a class is unavoidable please email vsdogtraining@icloud.com as early as possible.
When is the next class starting?
We try to have lots of classes available to try to fit in with your busy lives.
All Veronica’s classes and times are on the booking site. If you have any questions please email vsdogtraining@icloud.com
How old does my puppy need to be?
Puppies start between 8 – 16 weeks of age.
What do you teach in your classes?
We teach:
- Communication between dog and human
- How to teach puppy what you want it to know
- What to do when things go wrong
- How to use positive reinforcement effectively
- Cues such as: Sit, Come, Drop, Wait, Settle Training and Loose Leash Walking
- Puppy specifics such as: Toilet Training, Mouthing and Nipping Plan, Jumping, Play (learning what is appropriate play and what is not appropriate play)
- How to make the most of your puppy’s critical period (8-16 weeks) including appropriate socialisation and preventing separation anxiety
- Trick Training (to help build the bond, give puppy a job, and have fun)
The breeder said that I should wait until the puppy is fully vaccinated before starting puppy school?
Unfortunately by waiting until then, your puppy will have missed their critical learning period which is between 4 – 16 weeks of age. (This period has been determined by scientific research into critical learning periods for puppies.)
Is the trainer qualified?
Yes.
Veronica is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), an internationally recognised accreditation from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (www.ccpdt.org).
What happens if my puppy gets it right?
We only use positive reinforcement training.
When you puppy gets something right, they will be rewarded with a food treat, praise, pats and attention.
What happens when my puppy gets it wrong?
Your puppy will not be reprimanded when they get something wrong.
There is no use of the word ‘No’ or ‘Ah-Ah’ or any other aversive.
Your puppy will be given the chance to try again or lured to succeed so that they can be rewarded and reinforced.
Can I bring my family to class?
Family members are welcome and encouraged to attend – however we request if possible that only two members attend each week. This helps ensure puppies don’t get overwhelmed. Please, no children under the age of four. If you need to have more than two people per puppy please email Veronica in advance to make sure we have room. vsdogtraining@icloud.com
This is my child’s puppy, can they handle the puppy in class?
Children can handle the puppy in the class but need to be accompanied by an adult at all times.
