Pittwater Animal Hospital is often asked about work experience, student placement and voluntary work. We do not take volunteers but we do take three categories of students through the year.

1: Duke of Edinburgh Students

Students from Year 9 to Year 12 can apply to do a regular placement at Pittwater Animal Hospital.

  • Students do a regular weekday afternoon one day each week between 4pm and 5pm. Volunteering is for 3 -12 months depending on the level.
  • Tasks involve cleaning cages, feeding cats and dogs, washing up bowls, utensils and litter trays plus doing laundry.
  • Duties include assisting nurses and restocking the hospital.
  • Time will be spent caring for stray animals such as kittens and rabbits.
  • Students may do some animal handling and watch procedures.
  • A regular commitment is needed. When there are repeated absences the position will be terminated.
  • Students must wear enclosed shoes and leave mobile phone in their bag.

Interested students can apply by email with a brief description of who you are and why you would like to come to Pittwater Animal Hospital.

If we have availability, an appointment will be made for an interview before starting placement. All students must have their paperwork completed and handed in prior to the start date. This paperwork must include a certificate of insurance.

2: Year 10 Work Experience Students

Many schools run work experience programs where students are placed in a work environment for a week. Students attending PAH will see a variety of activities.

  • Students will be placed for one week Monday to Friday from 8am-3pm.
  • Mornings start with cleaning cages and feeding animals then washing all the bowls and litter trays.
  • Students will watch and sometimes assist as the veterinarian examines animals in hospital and prepares the animals for surgery.
  • A variety of procedures can be observed including examinations, anaesthetics, surgery, dental treatments, Xrays, dressings, ultrasound and laboratory tests.
  • The afternoon involves more cleaning and perhaps observing some veterinary consultations.
  • Throughout the day students help with the laundry, restocking the hospital and assisting the nurses.
  • Time will be spent caring for stray animals such as kittens and rabbits.
  • Students must wear enclosed shoes and leave their mobile phone in their bag.
  • Ideally only one school student is on placement each week.

3: Veterinary Students

Pittwater Animal Hospital acts a a teaching hospital and has hosted numerous training veterinarians. Most veterinary students come from Sydney University but some come from Charles Sturt University.

Trainee veterinarians are highly trained but need more practical experience. All their activities are supervised by our veterinary staff.

Veterinary Students are supervised examining animals, placing catheters, giving injections, monitoring anaesthetics and assisting with procedures. They may observe and help with consultations, calculating and making up medication.

As well as practicing their veterinary skills, we like to demonstrate to students how to work in a well run family veterinary hospital. Our history with the Northern Beaches community has resulted being trusted advisers for many families. Treating our clients and patients with kindness and understanding and treating all our workmates with respect is very important at Pittwater Animal Hospital.
