Worms Worms Worms

This is Wilbur a 9 week old Jack Russel Terrier. He only arrived last week and had not been given any worm, tick or flea control. Today he did a normal poo followed by a few tablespoons of what looked like spaghetti.

These are roundworms. All the puppies in this litter plus the mother will have roundworms. The worms live freely in the intestine and cause a pot bellied appearance, failure to gain weight and poor coat or condition. Sometimes large numbers of roundworms can cause an intestinal blockage.

Wilbur had a swollen belly but was very bright and had not been vomiting. He is going to be wormed very regularly for the next few weeks and we expect him to pass more worms. Roundworm can be passed to humans, so hand hygiene and prompt disposal of any dog poo is recommended.
