Fabulous treatment for arthritis pain in cats and dogs
Beransa® and Solensia® – Frequently Asked Questions
We have now given more than 1,000 doses of Beransa® (dogs) and Solensia® (cats) at Pittwater Animal Hospital. Many pets do extremely well on these treatments. Below is a balanced summary of benefits and risks so you can decide what’s right for your pet.
What are Beransa® and Solensia®?
They are monoclonal antibody (mAb) injections for osteoarthritis pain: Beransa® for dogs and Solensia® for cats. They target nerve growth factor (NGF), a key driver of arthritis pain.
Do they work?
Many pets show clear improvements in comfort and mobility — happier on walks, keener to jump up, and more playful at home. Response varies; if we don’t see benefit after two doses (4–8 weeks), we reassess for other causes of pain or stiffness.
How quickly will I see a change?
Some improve after the first injection; others after the second. We usually judge the effect after two monthly doses.
Are there side effects?
Most pets tolerate these injections very well. Mild injection-site discomfort is the most common issue. Rarely, more serious reactions occur. In our clinic we have seen:
• A dog with increased thirst and urination after long-term use.
• Two younger dogs that developed immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT); a link is uncertain but possible.
Important: side effects do not appear related to the number of injections — they can occur on the first dose or after many months. Our vets will discuss your pet’s history and risk factors before starting or continuing treatment.
Is long-term use safe?
Current evidence and our experience suggest good long-term safety for most pets. Because this is a newer class of medicine, we recommend regular check-ups and prompt reporting of any changes (thirst, appetite, bruising, lethargy).
Do I need to see a vet every time?
Our trained nurses can give routine injections. We ask that your pet has a veterinary review at least twice a year (often at vaccination and a mid-year arthritis check) to ensure the plan is still appropriate.
What if I prefer other options?
Alternatives include Cartrophen® courses, anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), other pain relievers, joint supplements, weight management, physiotherapy/hydrotherapy, and home modifications (soft bedding, non-slip mats). We can tailor a multimodal plan with or without Beransa®/Solensia®.
Will these injections fix the joints?
They don’t “repair” damaged cartilage, but by targeting NGF they reduce pain and secondary inflammation, allowing better mobility and quality of life. We usually combine them with weight control, exercise plans, and joint support.
When should I contact the clinic urgently?
If you notice bruising, bleeding, marked lethargy, collapse, sudden loss of appetite, vomiting, or excessive thirst/urination, contact us promptly for advice.
